NIB was created in 2002 to provide insurance services to businesses and residents throughout Nunavut. The company has its main office in Winnipeg with a support office in Rankin Inlet. Ambitions are to migrate management and sales operations to Rankin Inlet and other Nunavut communities as human resources are developed.

Nunavut Insurance Brokers Ltd. (NIB) is 60% owned by #6130518 Canada Corporation ­ a partnership of Sakku Investments Corp. (33.3%), Kitikmeot Corporation (33.3%) and Nunasi Corporation (33.3%) - and 40% owned by Horizon Insurance, one of Manitoba's largest insurance brokerages.
