Nunavut’s first manufacturing facility opens in Arviat with support from NGEN

Next Generation Manufacturing (NGen) supported the project through its Advanced Manufacturing Homebuilding Challenge, contributing $3.4 million toward the $9 million project.

A new modular housing manufacturing facility has opened in Arviat, becoming Nunavut’s first factory and marking a significant expansion of advanced manufacturing capabilities in Canada’s North.

The 64,500-square-foot facility, operated by Sakku Innovative Building Solutions (SIBS), is designed to produce modular homes and buildings for northern communities. According to project partners, the 100 per cent Inuit-owned facility will help address housing needs in Nunavut while creating local employment opportunities.

Next Generation Manufacturing (NGen) supported the project through its Advanced Manufacturing Homebuilding Challenge, contributing $3.4 million toward the $9 million project. The funding supported the installation and operationalization of advanced production cells and manufacturing equipment.

“This factory shows that industrialized housing truly can be a coast-to-coast-to-coast Canadian solution,” said Jayson Myers, CEO of NGen, in a statement.

At full capacity, the facility is expected to produce up to 40 housing units annually and support more than 40 direct jobs and over 100 indirect jobs through transportation, installation and supply chain activities. Approximately 93 per cent of the workforce is Inuit.

The facility began production Sept. 23 and is capable of manufacturing a range of building types, including single-family homes, multiplexes, staff housing and commercial facilities.

According to project partners, modular construction can reduce project timelines by up to 60 per cent compared with traditional building methods while improving quality and consistency.
